Many of the comments regarding refrigerators also apply to freezers.. There are however 3 main types to be aware of :-

Chest freezers - these are popular as domestic freezers and are generally good value for money. Disadvantages are the amount of floor space that they take up, frequent manual defrosting and stock control - very few premises have a chest freezer that does not have something lurking down in the bottom that should have been used months ago! There are now a number of stainless steel chest freezers available and also white/stainless combinations.

Upright (manual defrost) - these units have fixed shelves which carry the refrigerant gas. The shelves cannot be adjusted and will gradually build up with ice. Frequent manual defrosts are therefore necessary. Heavy usage and high ambient conditions can cause problems. They are however much more efficient when it comes to floor space.

Upright (fan assisted) - these units have a conventional fan assisted refrigeration system and therefore you should not find much ice. Shelves are adjustable and the units defrost themselves automatically. As you might imagine, they are more expensive than either of the above although they are normally suitable for heavy usage and higher ambient conditions.
