Maintenance

Like all mechanical systems, refrigeration equipment does require servicing. Ideally a qualified engineer should inspect the equipment every six months.

We always advise customers to check the condenser monthly. The condenser looks something like a small car radiator and has a fan mounted behind it. It is this item that passes the heat extracted from the equipment to the surrounding air. No matter how clean your premises are, dust etc. will collect on the condenser and reduce its efficiency. We have found that the best way to clean the condenser is with a soft upholstery type brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner. Obviously the equipment should be switched off at the main electrical supply and you should only attempt this if you are confident of your safety and abilities.

Other items to keep an eye on are the door seals (Environmental Health Officers tend to be quite strict on the condition of these) and also the temperature. Most equipment should be capable of maintaining the required temperature by running for approximately 18 hours in every 24.

Please note that systems with electric defrost (freezers etc.) will defrost automatically at regular intervals. If the temperature seems high then leave well alone for an hour and check again. If the temperature is still high then it is a good idea to call for an engineer.

Recent legislation (F-Gas) has placed a firm obligation on the operator of some equipment to ensure that there are no refrigerant leaks.

We strongly advise users of commercial refrigeration to check with either ourselves or their local refrigeration maintenance company on the regulations in relation to their own equipment.
